Archduke Franz Karl Salon
This room together with the adjoining salon was last occupied by Archduke Franz Karl, the father of Emperor Franz Joseph. After the death of the archduke in 1878 the rooms were refurbished and the decoration and furniture have remained largely unchanged to this day. The paintings that hang in the former study bring us back to the time of Maria Theresa one last time. The famous family portrait by Martin van Meytens and his studio shows Emperor Franz Stephan, Maria Theresa and eleven of their sixteen offspring on the terrace at Schönbrunn. Absent from the picture are the two children who were born later and three who had died previously.
