PRELIMINARY PROGRAM

Therapeutic modalities – from science to practice (09.00 – 16.00)
Min. no. of participants: 32
In the morning, David Levine and Janet Steiss will give a scientific based insight into frequently used therapeutic modalities (thermotherapy, therapeutic ultrasound, massage, electrotherapy, laser and magnet field). In the afternoon participants can choose between canine or horse hand on labs to train their skills with experienced physical therapists (dogs: D. Levine, Z. Vrbanac, M. Mueller, K. Barker-Benfield; horses: A. Bergh, R. Stodulka, J. Steiss, S. Valentin)
Labs à la carte - choose two of the following labs

Hip dysplasia in dogs - the same old story?
This day will be dedicated to the dog hip dysplasia complex. We will start the day with a short refresher of the anatomy, followed by a lecture with the topic of early diagnosis of CHD. We will talk about the clinical examination of young dogs with suspected CHD and also the findings of a physical therapist. Further topics will be the biomechanical aspects of CHD and osteoarthritis of the hip, the nutrition of puppies, genetic aspects of CHD and surgical interventions in growing dogs. The afternoon is dedicated to the physical therapy: what can we do after surgery, motion exercises for puppies and growing dogs and the long term conservative treatment.
Speakers: D. Millis, A. Vezzoni, B. Vidoni, L. Connell, B. Bockstahler, C. Iben, I. Sommerfeld-Stur, M. Mueller, S. Mai
The horse's neck - a rolling topic!
The horse program of the first day is dedicated to a hot topic - the horse's neck. We will open the day with a view on the functional anatomy and the biomechanics of the neck, followed by lectures about motor control, muscle function, dynamic stability and the role of biomechanical modeling. Further topics will be the clinical pathologies, updates in diagnostic imaging and the physical examination of the neck. Afterwards we will focus on the mobilization and manipulation and tactile proprioceptive techniques.
Speakers: A. Bergh, H. Clayton, N. Stubbs, C. Peham, R. Zsoldos, M. Prades, R. Weller, L. Goff, K. Haussler, S. Adair

Friday, 17th August 2012, 07.00 - 17.45
After the morning rounds to the topics "Finding a rehabilitation plan" (Dogs, J. Steiss, S. Mai) and "A critical view on the treatment approaches of back problems in horses" (T. Licka), we will focus on the following topics:
The dog with back pain
In this session we will talk about the functional anatomy of the spine, the clinical and physical therapeutic examination, diagnostic imaging and pathologies of the dogs back. We will also give an insight in research results regarding the biomechanics of the spine. Following this basic lectures we will focus on surgical intervention for back problems and medical approaches. A key note lecture is dedicated to the rehabilitation techniques for the dog with back pain.
Speakers: D. Millis, S. Kneissl, B. Bockstahler, L. Connell, U. Auer
The sacroiliac joint of horses - the base of the hindquarter
In the first part of this day speakers will inform you about the functional anatomy and the biomechanics of the SI-joint. We will proceed with the clinical and physiotherapeutic examination techniques, the objective assessment of hindquarter symmetry and the diagnostic imaging. After talking about the clinical pathologies, the therapeutic part of this session will cover the topics conservative treatment, the manipulation and physical therapy of the SI-joint.
Speakers: A. Bergh, L. Goff, R. Weller, T. Pfau, M. Prades, K. Haussler, S. Adair

Saturday, 18th August 2012, 07.00 - 16.00
In the morning round we will talk about the combination of physical therapy and acupuncture (dogs) and the question of medication versus doping control (horses).
Speakers: S. Mai, M. Mueller, C. Zach
Dog sports
Dogs are our sporting partners, but do you know about the exercise physiology of muscles, what the blood labs can tell us about the exposure and the cardiovascular system during exercises? Inform you further about common types of sports and injuries in dog sports! And last but not least: let's talk about the possibility to train our sporting partners!
Speakers: D. Millis, I. Schwendenwein, B. Egner, S. Mai
Horse exercise physiology
Medical and physiotherapeutic care of sporting horses is an important part of our work; therefore we will talk about the conditioning of the horse's cardiovascular system, thermoregulation and how to transform laboratory studies into practical concepts. Further topics will be muscles and their function and dysfunction and conditioning the sporting horse.
Speakers: C. McGowan, R. Van den Hoven, H. Clayton
